Ordering from Goodlabs

Who it suits

Someone who already knows which markers they want, and ideally someone who has a doctor to take the results to. Goodlabs is unusually plain about its own scope: it "does not provide: Medical diagnosis, Treatment recommendations, Prescriptions", and "Medical advice must come from a licensed healthcare provider." What it offers instead is price — single tests at $4 to $15 — and a shopping cart, so it rewards a reader who has already decided and punishes one who wants to be guided.

How ordering works

Seven steps, in Goodlabs' own numbering: "1. Choose Your Tests → 2. Review and Customize Order → 3. Place Your Order and Payment → 4. Schedule Your Lab Visit → 5. Prepare for Your Appointment → 6. Complete Your Blood Draw → 7. Receive and Review Your Results". No prior doctor visit is needed — "Orders are reviewed and approved by licensed physicians as part of the process" — and you take a lab order form and "your valid photo ID" to the draw. "Appointments are recommended, but some locations accept walk-ins": most LabCorp sites take walk-ins, many Quest sites do but "wait times can be long", and at BioReference "Appointments are generally required". Results run "2 to 6 business days after your blood draw" for most tests.

What to watch for

Where you live decides which lab you get, and it is not a free choice: "BioReference (Required for customers in New York/New Jersey; Quest and LabCorp are not available directly to consumers in NY/NJ)". BioReference is also the one that generally wants an appointment, and the prices recorded on this site are Quest's — the other two cost more. Hormone panels are slow: "Some specialized tests, especially hormone-related: up to 16 business days". The comprehensive panels ask for a "Morning appointment" with "Fasting required". And there is no insurance path: "Goodlabs does not support or bill insurance directly. We currently only accept HSA/FSA payments for eligible purchases."
